(UP)HILL COUNTRY
(UP)HILL COUNTRY Day Mode When We Renovate, We Elevate The existing landscape was poorly designed and installed, leading to a host of maintenance and aesthetic issues. We were asked by the client to take his builder-grade landscape in the West Austin area and make it “incredible.” That we did. Design-Build: Land We elevated the aesthetic with completely new landscape planting areas to new stone walkways and patio spaces. A circular fire pit area combines the modern/contemporary architectural style with the Texas Hill Country. Lastly, we cleaned and improved bed areas along the pool. Design-Build: Water We renovated a failing stream bed water feature by importing large limestone boulders, rebuilding the hydraulics, adjusting the liner and providing border plantings We also completely renovated the irrigation system and rebuilt drainage systems to reduce pooling and erosion issues. Design-Build: Light We designed and installed an extensive lighting system, using portions of the existing lighting infrastructure. CORNER COURTYARD
CORNER COURTYARD Day Mode A Small Courtyard That Goes Well Beyond Cute While many of our projects involve large open spaces, we love when we get a project that is the opposite. A Cozy Challenge Small spaces can be very difficult to design for a number of reasons, including minimum requirements for pathways, furniture, living spaces and plant material. It is also easy to make these small spaces too visually busy or “tight,” giving the space a claustrophobic feel. An Entertainment Oasis We designed new raised planters which tie into a cast stone fountain along with individual entertainment spaces surrounding a tiled fireplace and topiary trees. An outdoor kitchen was created to provide an area to entertain and serve guests. Magnificent Magnolias One of the most unique features of this courtyard was the use of espalier magnolia trees. Espalier is a tree training technique that involves growing trees flat along a wall using cables. This was originally used in monasteries to grow fruit trees in small spaces. In this case, we used them to break up the large expanses of wall and create a fully lush experience. TASTE OF ITALIA
TASTE OF ITALIA Day Mode A Dream Fulfilled A client’s dream to feel like they were in Italy when they looked out their windows or stood on their balconies was challenged by erosion and flooding. Equal Parts Challenge and Excitement The Garden project involved a spec home in the West Lake area that was constructed with incredible views and details yet little effort was put into the landscape. The land had a very steep slope, dropping over one hundred feet. The strip of land originally featured a dry creek that was filled during the construction. This created severe erosion and flooding issues for the property and neighbors. Fruits and Flowers In conversations with our clients, their desire was to have a beautiful villa garden complete with fruiting and flowering plants. In order to mirror the Italian countryside, terracing was imperative for treating the erosion and flooding issues. With only seventy feet of impervious hardscape available, we needed a way to create the structure of the garden. What’s Old is New Again The answers lied in old Texas Hill Country farming techniques. A series of berm rows down the face of the hill catch and retain water from the hill above. Trellis-trained fruit trees, grape vines, and berries in each berm create a vineyard effect. Additional plantings retain the steep slopes and minimize erosion while welded steel frameworks formed terraces and stairs. Finally, we designed a custom water feature in the shape and position of a deep channel that once existed within the dry creek.
